Upgrades are major releases for your Intranet software, which typically contain major feature enhancements and functionality changes.
How Upgrades are Applied
Upgrades are performed directly by customers on their own environments. If preferred, our Support Team can instead perform a scheduled upgrade as a paid Professional Service; contact support@intranetconnections.com for more information.
All upgrades are typically applied incrementally, with the exception of 13.0 to 14.0, and 14.0 to 15.0 (e.g. for customers currently on Version 12.5, you’d apply Version 13.0, Version 14.0, then Version 15.0).
Invalid Upgrade Message
If your software is more than one version behind the latest release, you'll see an Invalid upgrade message for more recent versions in the Admin area of your intranet. As you proceed through upgrades of the versions, the invalid message will disappear for each.
Upgrade Processes
The following table provides a basic overview of the process involved for each version upgrade. Version numbers are linked to the appropriate article with full upgrade instructions.
Upgrade to | Process |
---|---|
Version 16.0 | VM Snapshot/Backup files + Database backup > Update Services > run upgrade installer |
Version 15.5 | VM Snapshot/Backup files + Database backup > Update Services > run upgrade installer |
Version 15.0 | VM Snapshot/Backup files + Database backup > Update Services > run upgrade installer |
Version 14.5 | Backup files > run upgrade installer |
Version 14.0 | Backup files > uninstall IIS URL Rewrite Module if applicable > run upgrade installer |
Version 13.5 | Backup files > run upgrade installer |
Version 13.0 | Backup files > uninstall ColdFusion if applicable > run upgrade installer |
If your version of the software is older than Version 12.5, we recommend installing a new copy of the software on the latest version. We can't support upgrading from older versions due to issues encountered during the upgrade process (i.e. data corruption, visual elements, code from previous versions don't translate well after upgrading).
Check Before Upgrading
Always check the following prior to an upgrade:
Active Maintenance
Upgrades are available for customers who are current on their Annual Maintenance Renewal fee, using a permanent serial number. To confirm your maintenance status, look in the Admin area on the Setup tab. If you have any account-specific or maintenance-related questions, reach out to Customer Care.
Current Version
Your current version is also shown in the Admin area on the Setup tab. The upgrades you’ll need to download will depend on your current version.
Web Server Requirements
Check the web server requirements to ensure your setup can handle the latest version of the software. Depending on the demand of the software (e.g. graphic-intensive, heavy form usage, large amounts of content, etc.), you may need to increase your RAM and hard drive space for the software to run optimally. If you need to provision a new server, the Move Intranet to a New Server article will help.
Access to Upgrade Files
After clicking the link to download your upgrade file (link available on each version upgrade article), you'll need to enter the information below for your login details. Test prior to the upgrade to ensure you have access.
- UserName: email address of the Primary contact (i.e. typically the person responsible for contacting IC Support; if you're unsure, email support@intranetconnections.com and we can confirm the Primary contact email)
- Password: product serial number, found in the Admin area on the Setup tab
Backup
Before upgrading your intranet, you'll need to back up the site files and database, as detailed in the following section.
Backup Immediately Prior to Upgrade
Back up both your intranet database and your site (aka application) files immediately prior to an upgrade, following the steps below. Note that if you're using the same virtual server for both your intranet database and the web server, take a checkpoint/snapshot instead of following the steps for backing up below.
Site Files
Identify file locations:
- Drive Path - go to your Admin area, and on the Setup tab scroll down to the System Information section, where the Drive Location is shown. Note this as your Drive Location.
- Document Path - go to your Admin area, click the Security tab, under Advanced Settings click File Migration Utility and scroll down to where the path of your document files is shown. Note this as your Document Path, then exit this screen without taking any further action. For Version 14.5.1+, the Documents Location is shown on the Setup tab below the Drive Location.
Backup the files:
- On the server for your intranet, locate the files using the Document Path and Drive Location, as above
- Right-click the parent folder to copy
- Paste the folder and its included files in a location not on the web server
Database Backup
Use SQL Server Management Studio to create a backup of your database(s). If you don't already have SSMS, this is a free download from Microsoft.
To create the backup:
- Connect to your database server instance (e.g. Localhost, Localhost\SQLExpress, Localhost\IntraConnections) as an administrator
- Expand Databases
- Right-click on the Intranet and Stats databases (i.e. IntranetConnections, SQBoxStatistics (Version 14.0+))
- Click Tasks, then click Back Up
The default settings to backup the database(s) should be sufficient. This will save a [databasename].bak file to your selected location; the default location is [Program Files]\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Backup\.
CFML Engine: Lucee/Railo/ColdFusion
The Intranet requires one CFML engine to operate - either Lucee, Railo, or ColdFusion. Refer to the tables below for your current version of the Intranet. If upgrades will be done on a new server, make sure the compatible CFML engine for your current version of the intranet is installed.
When upgrading to Version 13.0+, the upgrade process will install the CFML engine for you.
Upgrading your production site on a new server and temporarily installing ColdFusion? Select the Developer version during installation which doesn't require a serial number, and allows two IP addresses to access it.
Lucee Version | Supported Intranet Version |
---|---|
Lucee 4.5 | Version 15.0 |
Lucee 4.5 | Version 13.5 to 14.5 |
Railo Version | Supported Intranet Version |
