Widgets are boxes of content which can be arranged on a page in frames. Learn more about how to use widgets.
In This Article
When you add a widget to a page, you’ll see that the widget options are grouped in six categories, described in this article.
Simple Widgets
Simple widgets are straightforward widgets which don’t display information from users, the intranet, or external sources. Options are listed below.
Quick Polls
One-question quick polls can be created, edited, or republished using this widget. Use it for fun surveys (e.g. favorite holiday dessert) or to help choose a company-wide event. Add instructions and as many answer options as you like, or choose whether to allow anonymous users to reply. Pick the date and time for your Quick Poll to start and end its display to users. Customize the colors of your poll, when to display, and how long it displays. Once responses have been received, use the Quick Polls Properties box to view all results, download to Excel, edit, or delete.
Note that Quick Polls remain on your intranet until you explicitly delete them, though they may 'expire' based on their Display End date and disappear from a page. To see all previous Quick Polls, edit an existing poll so you see the Build Tool box, and click the [show all polls and results] link as shown below; if you don't have a current Quick Poll, Edit a page and add a Quick Poll, then click the link. Once you're on the results page, all polls are shown, and you can email or download results, edit a poll (great way to re-use it), or delete it by clicking the red icon.
- show all polls and results - allows you to see all Quick Poll widget responses and export them into a csv file
-
Anonymous Access - This allows users who are not logged into the intranet to answer the quick poll. Site level login must be set to 'No' under Admin > Security tab:
- Logged-in users will still be able to answer as themselves, only anonymous users will have their names hidden.
- Display End - Set an end date for the widget to hide from the page. This widget is still accessible when editing the page.
This widget also supports the Display Start and End times. When an End date and time are set and the time has passed, a widget will be hidden. When editing the page, you'll see the hidden widget and there will be an 'Expired' banner over the top right corner of the widget.
Example of Quick Polls on the intranet:
Daily Tips
The Daily Tips widget is used to display tips which can be fully customized. Share environment or health tips, or company trivia. Add links or other formatting to your tips; show them randomly or sequentially; edit, delete, or reorder tips as needed; import tips using a CSV; and change the current tip by the hour, day, or week.
To import tips using a CSV, create the file adding all messages to a single column with the following header 'MESSAGES' as shown below.
Message Box
The Message Box widget is a versatile widget with a full html editor which can be used for displaying all kinds of content on your page, including text, links, images, tables, or custom code. Learn more about how to use the html editor, including adding links and resizing images. A basic example of the Message Box in use is shown below.
You can also add images in a variety of ways with the Message Box, as shown below. Use a table to assist with layout (1) and add some links (note: once you have your layout finalized, right-click on the table and in Table Properties change the border to 0 to eliminate it), add images with a header and border (2), or add images without a header or border (3) if you want the images to float in the widget space (under the widget's Theme Options change the Header and Border to 'none').
The Message Box widget also supports the Display Start and End times. When an end date and time are set and the time has passed, a widget will be hidden. When editing the page, you'll see the hidden widget and there will be an 'Expired' banner over the top right corner of the widget.
Aside from text, videos and images, it's also possible to add animated GIFs to a Message Box widget. However, please note that the Widget Width and Height resize to fit is not applicable to it. To adjust the GIFs size, you must access Source.
Image
The Image widget is used for a custom image of your choice. Use this widget to display a solo image such as a logo, to just add graphic interest to a page or to link to a website. This is the one widget which by default doesn’t have a border or header, so the image will show on its own as in the outlined image below (though you can choose to add a header and/or border under Theme Options in the widget box). Note that if you want to add multiple images or words, you'll need to use a Message Box widget.
After uploading the image you can leave it at its default original size, or resize to custom dimensions. Note that the image will by default resize to the size of the widget. If you want to specify a different image size, remove either the height or width and leaving the other Dimension blank to retain the proportions (1), and change the Widget Width (2) and Widget Height (3) to the scroll option.
Search Box
Add a quick search widget for users to search for content. Choose whether to search within the department site for people only, content only, or both options. This widget is available only on a department site.
Image Slider
The Image Slider widget is used to display a series of large-scale rotating images, as shown below. Users can navigate between images by either clicking the arrows at the sides (1) or clicking the current image indicator (2).
The Build Tool pop-up for the Image Slider is shown below. Choose what Title you want to show for the widget (leave blank if no title), the Duration to show each image, Transition Speed between images, Height and Width of the image, and whether links will open in a new window or the same window. When you add image slides, click Add a new slide (1), choose the file, add a link if desired, and click Add; repeat as necessary. Once you have multiple images, you can click on the left side of the image field (2) and drag to reorder your images as you like. You can also mouse over the image field and either edit, make the image the current slide, or delete the image. When done, click Save Widgets to finalize.
Content Feed Widgets
Content Feed widgets allow you to show content from other parts of your intranet. Widgets include the following:
Application Feed
The Application Feed widget displays recently published content from one or more similar applications based on publish date (i.e. newest to oldest). Items don't have to be advertised to appear in this widget, they just have to be published (i.e. saved). Think of it as a window into a specific type of content which automatically reveals information.
The widget can also be used to only show information from certain folders, categories, authors, etc. For example, if HR has an Onboarding folder, all documents placed within that folder could be made to appear on a Hiring site using an App Feed widget. Newly updated or added documents would appear without any further action required.
To learn how to add an Application feed based on the type of app selected, check out our Adding an Application Feed Widget article.
Appbuilder - click the orange triangle to reveal options; if there are sub-folders, click the edit pencil to reveal options.
Blog Feed
With this widget, you can display recent posts from one or multiple intranet blogs. Choose the number of posts and characters to display, and whether to include a photo with the display.
What's New Feed
The What's New widget displays a list of advertised items from all applications across the site. This is a great way to show your employees new items that have been recently published on the intranet. Only items which have been advertised will appear in this widget.
When publishing content, checking the 'Advertise to' box before clicking Publish sends the item to What's New; checking the 'Do Not Advertise' box avoids this. Item display is based on advertise and archive dates, and the number of items displayed can be adjusted as needed. Note that if this widget is on a department page, it will only show advertised items from applications within that department.
Site Widget Feed
The Site Widget Feed lets a department site owner publish a widget from their home page directly to the main intranet Home Page. You can use this to provide limited ability to update a specific Home Page area without providing the user full Site Designer or Site Administrator rights. This widget is available only on the main intranet home site.
Check out our walkthrough of how to set up a Site Widget Feed on your homepage with a Message Box widget on a Team Site:
Site Tasks
Manage a task list for your site by creating tasks, emailing users, marking them complete, or editing and deleting them as required. You can control which users and groups can view the tasks in this widget. Once you’ve added the widget, mouse over to the right and click the small green + to add tasks. The edit pencil beside each task can then be used to manage existing tasks. This widget is available only on a department site.
User Widgets
User Widgets show information which is specific to individual intranet users.
My Bookmarks
The My Bookmarks widget creates quick access to a logged-in user's personal intranet bookmarks (these can also be accessed through an employee's profile). Bookmarks can be added from any intranet page by clicking Bookmarks in the Toolbar. Learn more about bookmarks.
User Login
Provide a login widget on the homepage with a username and password field. This is only applicable if your site allows anonymous access.
My Profile
The My Profile widget shows the user their profile including their picture, limited contact details such as their title, and quick shortcuts to profile features like alerts and bookmarks.
Read Confirm Reminders
This widget that shows the user documents that require their read and agree confirmation, which can be useful for policy or HR documents. When adding this widget, you can either choose Call to Action (i.e. an alert box showing the number of items a user needs to read with a link to their personal dashboard), or Detail View (i.e. lists the linked items the user needs to read and confirm). Learn more about Read & Confirm.
Social Widgets
Connect intranet users by sharing their information with coworkers.
Birthday
The Birthday widget shows employee birthdays, with the options of displaying staff from a specific department and/or location, days in advance, and number of birthdays. If you’d rather not show employees’ ages, under Admin > Directory > Manage Fields scroll down to Birthday and check the box “hide the birthday year for all users”; this will affect birthdays throughout the intranet, not just in the widget.
Anniversary
The Anniversary widget shows employees who have upcoming anniversaries, which can include the number of years they’ve been with the organization. Users can send email or wall post congratulations.
Live Chat
The Live Chat widget puts a chat widget on the page, and lets you select specific departments or users who can access that widget. This widget is great for inserting into Department sites where employees who are part of that Department can chat between themselves. Note that Chat must be turned on both for the intranet (under Admin) and for the selected employees in order to use this widget. Learn more about Chats.
Employee Profiles
The Employee Profile widget can be used to feature one (or many) specific employees, members of certain departments, or welcome new hires. You can choose whether to display employees at random, and to include their job description, personal information, or photo. Note that if a number of days for the recent hires period isn't specified, it defaults to 365 (i.e. if you wanted hires from the previous 30 days to be shown, you would specify 30).
Status Updates
The Status Updates widget is used for displaying the most recent status updates from your employees, which they made directly in their profile; learn more about Employee Profiles. Options include showing only status icons, showing only specific statuses such as out or sick, and limiting the number of statuses shown.
Wall Posts
The Wall Posts widget is used to display recent content from employees’ Walls; learn more about Employee Walls. When creating this widget you have the option to select specific users or departments to display content. You can also Strip HTML, so any custom HTML will be removed from the post, saving some display space.
External Content Widgets
External Content widgets display content which is external to the intranet.
RSS Feed
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, and refers to news services available on the web that you can subscribe to. The RSS Feed widget is used for displaying content from an RSS Feed. Enter the address of the feed, how many articles you’d like displayed, how often you want the Feed refreshed, and how big you want the widget. Note that the more Feeds you display, the longer it will take the page to load.
This widget also supports the Display Start and End times. When an End date and time are set and the time has passed, a widget will be hidden. When editing the page, you'll see the hidden widget and there will be an 'Expired' banner over the top right corner of the widget.
Custom Code
This widget is a free-form widget which allows you to add custom code (e.g. Javascript, HTML, XML) and have it execute within the page. You can create engaging home page widgets by searching for code online, copying the code, and pasting it into your Custom Code Widget. Try adding a Twitter feed (search for 'embed Twitter feed'), world clock, or countdown ticker for a company event.
This widget also supports the Display Start and End times. When an End date and time are set and the time has passed, a widget will be hidden. When editing the page, you'll see the hidden widget and there will be an 'Expired' banner over the top right corner of the widget.
When including custom code onto your site we recommend first testing the code on a separate page within the intranet, so if the code affects functionality it won't break a page you've been working on previously.
Our Support Team provides unlimited product support for Intranet Connections. Since custom code is by definition custom and not part of our software, we're unable to provide support for it. Any custom code is used at an organization's own risk.
Weather
The Weather widget was previously used for displaying the current Weather Underground forecast for a specific location.
We'll be turning off the Weather service as of December 17th 2018. Learn more about this change.
Exchange Synchronization
The Exchange Synchronization widget displays a list of calendar events from shared calendars in your Exchange web server. An intranet Admin who handles the technical aspects of the intranet must alter some settings in order to allow this widget to function properly.
